Internet Pop-ups and what to do about them

It's a common problem. The internet is flooded with advertisements for software to combat the spyware problem. If you think this might be a problem for you … read more!

Unlike other forms of software, which tend to either be "good" or "bad," spyware often exists in shades of "gray." With the exception of malicious behaviors, many of the behaviors could have legitimate purposes. The potential for harm and disruption to your PC experience depends on the specific behaviors demonstrated by a given program.

Do you know if your PC is affected by spyware? If you experience slower Internet connection speeds, unwanted pop-up ads even when you aren't surfing the Web, changes in Web browser settings or home pages, or computer unresponsiveness, your computer may be infected. Because the typical goal of spyware is to steal information, some types of spyware may run quietly and not display any outward signs of infection. The best way to check for infection is to scan your computer using an updated utility.

In a previous newsletter I mentioned a few programs Ad-Aware SE, Spybot and Spyware Blaster, which are all helpful tools to help in the fight to regain control of your computer. Today I would like to talk about FIREFOX.

As USA Today has said, "Beware of spyware. If you can, use the Firefox browser."

Firefox is a browser (similar to Explorer and Netscape) but it has some distinct advantages. Here are a few of them.
  1. Pop-up blocker. Firefox prevents certain pop-ups. Instead of displaying them it would occupy a tiny frame across the top of the browser window, telling you that it has prevented a pop-up from displaying.
  2. Better control of your downloads. You can set a standard download directory (the default is your desktop) where it will save all of your downloads. This applies to images, software etc. No more hunting for where you saved it.
  3. Firefox is the most customizable browser on the planet; you can effortlessly tailor Firefox to your needs for the best possible browsing experience. Themes allow you to customise the appearance, while extensions offer enhanced features and functionality.
  4. Tabbed Browsing is a powerful feature that makes surfing the web faster and more convenient. Managing multiple web pages within a single window helps to keep your desktop and taskbar free from clutter; and allows you to keep reading while other pages load in the background.
The intuitive interface and keyboard shortcuts that make it easy to open and switch between multiple tabs, save you time and help you to find and read more information, faster. Simply press Ctrl+T, or middle-click a link to open a new tab.
  5. Find as you type allows you to search the current page simply by typing. As you type, the find toolbar will display and the matching text will be immediately highlighted; helping you to find what you're looking for, faster than ever.
  6. It's not Microsoft - well for some people that's reason enough.
  7. It's growing fast According to http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp, Firefox is used for over 20% of page views on the Internet and this is increasing by around 1.5% every month. Netscape which was once the world's leader, is now in use less than 2%.
  8. Privacy and security - According to U.S. government's Computer Emergency Readiness Team them, the available security updates for Microsoft Explorer still leave too many security flaws and allow spyware and viruses to get onto a computer and even steal credit card numbers.
